Description
A melancholy young woman with flowing auburn hair sits alone in an ornate wooden boat, draped in a white gown against a richly embroidered tapestry, drifting through a shadowy, reed-lined river surrounded by lush dark woodland. The scene depicts Elaine of Astolat — the Lady of Shalott — from Alfred Lord Tennyson's 1832 poem of the same name, capturing the moment she leaves her tower and begins her doomed journey down the river toward Camelot. Waterhouse's Pre-Raphaelite masterpiece is celebrated for its luminous, romantic atmosphere and its blend of medieval legend with deep psychological pathos.
