Description

This preparatory sketch by Koloman Moser depicts a stylized female figure with a red-haired, mask-like face standing amid bold vertical columns of red, black, purple, and gold, flanked by a geometric grid of green and purple rectangles rendered on graph paper. The composition reflects the distinctive flat, decorative vocabulary of the Wiener Werkstätte — the Viennese arts-and-crafts collective co-founded by Moser in 1903 in Vienna, Austria, which sought to unite fine art and applied design. The vivid color blocking and rigid geometry showcase Moser's pivotal role in the Vienna Secession and early modern European design.
