Description

This iconic poster-style painting by Catalan modernista artist Ramon Casas depicts Pere Romeu, the lanky proprietor of the legendary Barcelona tavern Els Quatre Gats (4 Gats), seated in profile wearing a long coat and smoking a pipe, with a lively crowd of bohemian patrons visible in the golden background. Els Quatre Gats, located in the Gothic Quarter of Barcelona and opened in 1897, was the celebrated gathering place of the Catalan avant-garde, frequented by a young Pablo Picasso and other modernista artists. The muted green-grey figure of Romeu against the warm amber backdrop captures the café's convivial spirit and its importance as the heart of Barcelona's fin-de-siècle artistic scene.
