Description

This elegant Art Nouveau advertisement poster depicts a fashionable woman in profile wearing a black cape and golden hat, holding a cigarette with a languid, refined air — the smoke curling upward into the bold 'JOB' lettering above. Created by Jane Atché for the JOB cigarette paper brand, the poster was awarded 'Hors Concours' (beyond competition, a mark of highest distinction) at the Paris Exposition Universelle of 1889 — the same world's fair that inaugurated the Eiffel Tower in Paris, France. The muted blue-gray palette, graceful linework, and decorative gold typography are hallmarks of the French Belle Époque poster tradition.
