Description

This lush Art Nouveau advertising poster depicts an elegant red-haired woman in a flowing yellow-green gown, cradling a bowl of chocolate while two cherubic children reach toward her amid cascading blossoms and ornate foliage. Created by Belgian poster artist Antoine Théodore Privat-Livemont, a master of the Belle Époque style, the work promotes Tropon Chocolade-Cacao — a chocolate and cocoa product manufactured by Barthel Mertens & Co. of Mülheim am Rhein, a town on the eastern bank of the Rhine River in the Cologne/Bonn region of Germany. The sinuous lines, rich botanical motifs, and idealized feminine figure are hallmarks of Privat-Livemont's celebrated lithographic poster work from the 1890s.
