Description

This lithographic charity poster by Jules Chéret depicts a dramatic coastal rescue scene: a woman in traditional Breton dress kneels over a shipwrecked sailor on a stormy beach, while a stricken vessel founders in the waves and a lighthouse looms in the background. The image was created for the Société de Secours aux Familles des Marins Naufragés (Society for Aid to Families of Shipwrecked Sailors), a French maritime relief organization, to promote a charity event held at the Palais du Trocadéro in Paris on 27 May 1893. Chéret, widely regarded as the father of the modern poster, rendered the scene with his characteristic expressive lithography, blending pathos and decorative elegance.
