Description

This lithographic poster by Jules Chéret — the father of the modern French poster — advertises an exhibition of French art from the Louis XIV and Louis XV periods, held at the École des Beaux-Arts, 17 Quai Malaquais, Paris. A silhouetted gentleman in a top hat and long coat leans forward to read a notice posted on a dark wall, rendered with Chéret's characteristic loose, expressive linework and warm cream ground. The École des Beaux-Arts, situated on the Left Bank of the Seine in Paris's 6th arrondissement, was France's preeminent fine-arts institution and a fitting venue for such a retrospective.
