Description

This expressive lithograph by Swiss-French artist Théophile Alexandre Steinlen depicts two cats — a calico curled and turned away, and a sleek black cat facing outward — rendered in loose, gestural brushwork with warm amber and ink tones against a pale ground. The piece was produced as a poster for a 1894 exhibition of Steinlen's drawn and painted works at La Bodinière, a celebrated Parisian salon and concert hall located on Rue Saint-Lazare in Paris, France. Steinlen, renowned for his affectionate and lifelike portrayals of Parisian street cats, used this motif as a signature element across his posters and illustrations of the Belle Époque era.
