Description

This richly hand-colored engraving depicts the Ptolemaic geocentric model of the cosmos, with Earth at the center surrounded by concentric orbital rings for the Moon, Mercury, Venus, the Sun, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn, all labeled in Latin. The composition is framed by allegorical figures — classical scholars and celestial muses — at each corner, lending the diagram the grandeur of a baroque cosmological treatise. Originally published in Andreas Cellarius's celebrated celestial atlas 'Harmonia Macrocosmica' (Amsterdam, 1660), this plate illustrates the ancient Greek astronomer Ptolemy's Earth-centered universe, a model that dominated Western astronomy for over a millennium.
