Description
This iconic self-portrait depicts Vincent van Gogh in a blue fur cap and heavy green coat, his right ear wrapped in a white bandage, gazing directly at the viewer with a composed yet haunted expression. Behind him hangs a Japanese woodblock print and a glimpse of a window, details that reflect his well-known admiration for Japanese art during his time in Arles, in the south of France. Painted in January 1889 shortly after the infamous incident in which van Gogh severed part of his own ear, the work is a landmark of Post-Impressionism and a profound study of psychological intensity.
