Description

A glowing café terrace blazes with warm lamplight against a deep cobalt night sky studded with swirling stars, as patrons sit at round tables on a cobblestone street. The work depicts the Café van Gogh (now Café La Nuit) on the Place du Forum in Arles, France — a town in Provence where Van Gogh lived and worked prolifically in 1888. Painted entirely outdoors at night, it was one of the first works Van Gogh created using only color — without black — to render darkness, and the contrast of the radiant yellow awning against the electric blue sky gives the scene its iconic warmth.
