Description

This vibrant post-impressionist scene depicts laborers harvesting grapes in a vineyard ablaze with deep reds and oranges beneath a glowing yellow sun, conveying tremendous energy through Van Gogh's signature swirling, expressive brushwork. The Red Vineyard was painted in Arles, in the Provence region of southern France, and is historically notable as the only painting Van Gogh is known to have sold during his lifetime. A canal or river borders the right side of the composition, reflecting the warm autumnal light, while dark trees frame the luminous sky above.
