Description

A vivid, densely packed garden scene bursting with red-orange bearded irises rendered in van Gogh's characteristic thick, swirling brushstrokes. A single white iris stands apart near the left edge, offering a quiet counterpoint to the fiery mass of blooms. 'Irises' was painted in May 1889 at the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, France, where van Gogh found solace and inspiration in the garden; this version, notable for its red rather than blue-violet blooms (a color shift attributed to fading pigment), is held in the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles.
