Description

Delicate white and pale-pink almond blossoms burst from gnarled brown branches set against a luminous turquoise sky, radiating a sense of renewal and tender joy. Van Gogh painted this celebrated work in February 1890 in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, France, as a gift to celebrate the birth of his nephew and namesake, Theo's son Vincent Willem. The flat, graphic branch silhouettes and vivid blue-green background reflect the deep influence of Japanese woodblock prints on Van Gogh's late style.
