Description
This vibrant oil painting depicts a lone artist — widely understood to be a self-portrait of Van Gogh — striding along a sun-drenched road near Arles, in the south of France, carrying his easel and painting supplies under a blazing summer sky. The scene bursts with Van Gogh's signature impasto brushwork and warm golden yellows, capturing the flat Provençal landscape with wheat fields, plane trees, and a distant industrial horizon typical of the Arles countryside. The original work, painted in August 1888, was lost during World War II and is now known only through photographs and copies, making reproductions especially significant.
