Description

Almond Blossoms depicts delicate white blooms and budding branches of an almond tree set against a vivid turquoise sky, rendered in Van Gogh's signature impasto brushwork with rich, textured strokes of gold, green, and white. Van Gogh painted this celebrated work in February 1890 while staying at the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, France, as a gift to celebrate the birth of his nephew and namesake, Theo's son Vincent Willem. The radiant blue background and intricate branching pattern reflect the influence of Japanese woodblock prints and remain among the most beloved and recognizable compositions in the Post-Impressionist canon.
