Description

Turner's harrowing masterpiece depicts a turbulent sea engulfed in a blazing sunset, with a slave ship visible in the stormy distance and desperate figures and shackled limbs visible in the churning foreground waves. The swirling reds, oranges, and yellows create an atmosphere of visceral tragedy and sublime natural fury. Painted in 1840 and now held at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the work was inspired by the real-life Zong massacre of 1781, in which enslaved people were thrown overboard for an insurance claim, and it stands as one of the most powerful moral and artistic statements in Western art.
