Description

A ghostly white sailing warship is towed along a glassy river at sunset by a dark, smoke-belching steam tugboat, bathing the scene in radiant oranges, golds, and pale mist. The painting depicts the HMS Temeraire, a celebrated British Royal Navy ship that fought heroically at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805, here being hauled to a Rotherhithe shipbreaker's yard on the River Thames near London. Turner captures the poignant contrast between the age of sail and the rising industrial era in a luminous, atmospheric composition widely regarded as one of the greatest paintings in the National Gallery, London.
