Description

This iconic 1891 lithograph poster depicts La Goulue — the celebrated cancan dancer Louise Weber — twirling in a white ruffled skirt at the Moulin Rouge, flanked by the silhouetted figure of her dance partner Valentin le Désossé. The Moulin Rouge was a famous cabaret and dance hall that opened in 1889 in the Pigalle district of Paris, France, becoming synonymous with Montmartre's bohemian nightlife. Toulouse-Lautrec's bold flat shapes, black silhouettes, and warm golden palette defined a new era of poster art and remain among the most recognizable images of the Belle Époque.
