Description

This sepia-toned 19th-century photograph captures John Singer Sargent standing in his Paris studio beside his monumental portrait 'Madame X' (1884), a life-sized depiction of Virginie Amélie Avegno Gautreau in a black evening gown. The painting, now housed in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, caused a scandal at the 1884 Paris Salon due to its provocative pose and the subject's revealing décolletage. The studio interior — featuring an ornate fireplace, draped fabrics, and an easel — evokes the cultivated bohemian atmosphere of the Parisian art world in the Belle Époque era.
