Description
A flamenco dancer in a sweeping white skirt commands the foreground, her arms raised in dramatic motion against a smoky, shadow-drenched interior where guitarists and singers provide musical accompaniment. The composition pulses with energy and spontaneity, capturing the raw spirit of Spanish flamenco performance. 'El Jaleo' — 'jaleo' being the Spanish term for the shouts and clapping that animate flamenco — was painted by John Singer Sargent following his travels in Spain and is considered one of the most celebrated depictions of Spanish culture in 19th-century American art; the monumental original hangs in the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston, Massachusetts.
