Description

This luminous Impressionist oil painting depicts two young girls on a sunlit terrace — an older girl in a deep-blue jacket and vivid red hat stands beside a younger child wearing a flower-adorned bonnet, with a basket of colorful yarn resting before them and a blossoming spring landscape visible beyond the railing. Renoir painted 'Two Sisters (On the Terrace)' in 1881 at Chatou, a small island town on the Seine River just west of Paris that was a favorite retreat for Impressionist artists. The work is now held in the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago, and its warm, dappled light and tender portrayal of childhood make it a cherished example of Renoir's figure painting at its peak.
