Description

This radiant Impressionist masterpiece depicts a lively gathering of friends enjoying food, wine, and conversation beneath a striped awning on a sun-dappled terrace. The scene is set at the Maison Fournaise restaurant on the Seine River at Chatou, a popular weekend retreat near Paris favored by Renoir and his circle in the early 1880s. Warm, luminous brushwork captures the relaxed camaraderie of the figures — boaters in straw hats, elegantly dressed women, and a small dog — suffusing the canvas with the joyful spirit of leisure in late 19th-century France.
