Description

This masterful oil painting depicts Dr. Nicolaes Tulp conducting a public dissection before seven attentive observers, rendered in Rembrandt's signature chiaroscuro with deep shadows and luminous flesh tones that draw the eye to the cadaver and the surgeon's gesturing hand. Dr. Nicolaes Tulp was the official city anatomist of Amsterdam, and this scene takes place in the Waag building's anatomy theater in Amsterdam, Netherlands, where public dissections were annual civic events. Painted in 1632, it is one of Rembrandt's earliest commissioned group portraits and now hangs in the Mauritshuis museum in The Hague.
