Description
A luminous botanical study of Rosa centifolia — the Cabbage Rose or Hundred-leaved Rose — rendered with exquisite detail: a full, densely-petalled pink bloom commands the center, flanked by smaller buds and dark serrated leaves on a thorny stem against a soft ivory ground. The Latin caption 'Rosa centifolia' and French 'Rose à cent feuilles' appear beneath, reflecting the formal scientific plate tradition of Redouté's landmark publication Les Roses (1817–1824). Pierre-Joseph Redouté, court botanist to Marie Antoinette and later Empress Joséphine, produced the three-volume Les Roses at Malmaison, France — widely regarded as the finest floral illustration series ever published.
