Description

A delicate botanical plate by Pierre-Joseph Redouté — the celebrated 'Raphael of Flowers' — depicting two species of rose: Fig. 1, Rosa semper virens (the ever-green rose), with clusters of small white blossoms and golden stamens set against rich dark-green foliage, and Fig. 2, Rosa bracteata (the Macartney rose), a low-spreading variety with similarly white, open-faced flowers. The illustration is rendered in Redouté's signature stipple-engraving and watercolor technique, combining scientific precision with painterly elegance. Originally published as part of his monumental work 'Les Roses' (1817–1824), this plate comes from the New York Public Library's collection and exemplifies the Neoclassical botanical illustration tradition that made Redouté the official flower painter to the French court.
