Description

This exquisite botanical plate by Pierre-Joseph Redouté, the celebrated 'Raphael of flowers,' depicts two white rose species: the full, many-petalled Rosa alba (White Rose of York) at center and the delicate single-bloomed Rosa Pimpinellifolia (Scotch Rose) at lower left, rendered with meticulous detail against a warm ivory ground. The illustration was published in Redouté's landmark three-volume work 'Les Roses' (1817–1824), widely considered one of the finest flower books ever produced, in which each plate was printed by stipple engraving and hand-colored to capture the subtle tonal nuances of his original watercolors. The pairing of the lush, clustered petals of the Alba with the spare simplicity of the Pimpinellifolia creates a graceful botanical study that conveys both scientific precision and romantic elegance.
