Description
This exquisite botanical plate by Pierre-Joseph Redouté depicts two rose species: Rosa villosa (the Apple Rose) with its soft pink blooms and distinctive bristly hips, and Rosa centifolia Pomponia (the Pompon Rose) with its densely petalled, delicate pink flower. Rendered in Redouté's signature luminous watercolor style, the composition features detailed cross-sections of rose hips alongside lush green foliage, capturing the scientific precision and artistic elegance that made him the foremost botanical illustrator of his era. Redouté, often called the 'Raphael of Flowers,' produced these plates for his celebrated series 'Les Roses' (1817–1824), commissioned under the patronage of Empress Joséphine of France.
