Description

This exquisite botanical illustration depicts Rosa Indica — the India Rose — rendered in Redouté's signature style: two open deep-crimson blooms with golden stamens rise gracefully from arching stems clothed in serrated green leaves, set against a soft cream background. Pierre-Joseph Redouté (1759–1840), often called 'the Raphael of flowers,' created this plate for his landmark publication 'Les Roses' (1817–1824), the most celebrated florilegium of the 19th century, produced under the patronage of Empress Joséphine at Malmaison. The Latin caption 'Rosa Indica' and its French counterpart 'Rosier des Indes' refer to the China/India rose group, prized for its repeat-flowering habit and pivotal role in breeding modern garden roses.
