Description
A majestic, ancient oak tree dominates the composition, its gnarled trunk and sweeping branches filling the canvas with dappled sunlight filtering through lush green foliage. Warm autumn leaves carpet the forest floor in amber and russet tones, contrasting beautifully with the cool shadows of the woodland interior. This work depicts the Bodmer Oak in the Forest of Fontainebleau, a celebrated woodland near the village of Barbizon southeast of Paris that was a favored destination for Barbizon School painters and the young Impressionists in the 1860s.
