Description

This monumental fresco depicts the Second Coming of Christ and the final judgment of souls, filled with hundreds of dynamic, muscular figures ascending to heaven or descending to hell across a vast celestial blue expanse. Christ appears at the center in a commanding pose, surrounded by saints, angels, and the resurrected dead in a swirling composition of extraordinary drama and emotional intensity. The Last Judgment was painted by Michelangelo on the altar wall of the Sistine Chapel in Vatican City between 1536 and 1541, and remains one of the most celebrated and influential works of Renaissance art in the world.
