Description

Five vivid vermillion figures dance in a circle against a sweeping deep-blue sky and a lush green ground, their fluid forms radiating energy and primal joy. The composition's bold, flat planes of pure color and rhythmic movement are hallmarks of Matisse's Fauvism at its most exuberant. 'The Dance' (1910) was commissioned by Russian art patron Sergei Shchukin and now hangs in the Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg, Russia, making it one of the most celebrated works of early modern art.
