Description

This 1874 Mitchell engraved map depicts Oceanica — encompassing the North and South Pacific Ocean, Australia, Polynesia, Micronesia, Melanesia, and Hawaii (labeled 'Sandwich Islands') — with a bold pink boundary line demarcating Polynesia's vast extent. An inset in the lower right provides a detailed view of the Sandwich Islands, the historical name for the Hawaiian archipelago, named by Captain James Cook in 1778 after the Earl of Sandwich. Published by Samuel Augustus Mitchell Jr., this hand-colored antique map is framed by an ornate floral and foliate engraved border typical of mid-19th-century American cartography.
