Description
This finely detailed 1862 engraved map by the renowned Gotha-based cartographic publisher Justus Perthes depicts Denmark (Dänemark) along with the duchies of Schleswig, Holstein, and Lauenburg, as well as Iceland (Island) and the Faroe Islands (Färöer), rendered with hand-applied color washes to distinguish territories and coastlines. Denmark, a Scandinavian kingdom in Northern Europe bordered by the North Sea and the Baltic Sea, is shown with meticulous topographic and administrative detail characteristic of Stieler's Hand-Atlas, one of the most authoritative German geographic atlases of the 19th century. The aged cream-toned paper, delicate typography, and inset maps of Iceland and the Faroe Islands give this piece an elegant antiquarian quality that suits study, library, or study room décor.
