Description

This beautifully hand-colored antique world map, published by Joseph Hutchins Colton in 1855, presents the entire globe using the Mercator projection — a cylindrical mapping method introduced in 1569 that became the standard for nautical navigation. Continents and nations are rendered in delicate pastel washes of pink, green, teal, and yellow, with detailed coastlines, country borders, and ocean routes marked throughout. The map is framed by an ornate vine-and-flower border, and features a decorative compass rose in the South Atlantic, evoking the golden age of cartography and exploration.
