Description

This finely engraved 1852 map by Victor Levasseur depicts the Département du Jura in eastern France, surrounded by elaborate decorative vignettes including portrait medallions of notable figures, a scenic landscape, a coat of arms, and allegorical scenes of local industry and agriculture. The Jura department takes its name from the Jura Mountains and is known for its wines, Comté cheese, and watchmaking traditions — products subtly echoed in the ornamental borders. Text panels in French provide statistical and geographic context, making this both a cartographic document and a richly illustrated cultural artifact.
