Description
This richly decorated 1852 engraved map by Victor Levasseur depicts the Département du Gard, a region in southern France known for landmarks such as the Pont du Gard Roman aqueduct and the city of Nîmes. The heart-shaped cartouche is framed by elaborate allegorical vignettes — classical columns, pastoral figures, and regional symbols — flanked by statistical and descriptive text panels in French. Delicate hand-colored route lines in orange and pink highlight roads and boundaries across the meticulously detailed departmental map.
