Description

This richly detailed 1852 engraved map by Victor Levasseur depicts the Department of Haut-Rhin in the Alsace region of northeastern France, bordered by the Rhine River and Germany to the east. The central hand-colored map is framed by elaborate allegorical vignettes featuring regional figures in traditional dress, livestock, barrels evoking the area's celebrated wine production, and two portrait medallions, with flanking columns of French statistical and administrative text. Haut-Rhin, home to iconic Alsatian towns such as Colmar and Mulhouse, is renowned for its Alsace Wine Route (Route des Vins d'Alsace), one of France's oldest wine tourism roads.
