Description

This ornate 1852 engraved map by Victor Levasseur depicts the Department of Calvados in Normandy, northern France, rendered in delicate hand-applied color with road and administrative networks clearly delineated. Calvados — the coastal Norman department bordering the English Channel and home to the historic D-Day landing beaches — is surrounded by elaborate allegorical vignettes featuring barrels of the region's famed apple brandy, horses, local produce, and portrait medallions of notable figures. Statistical text panels flank the map on either side, reflecting the scholarly cartographic tradition of 19th-century French atlas publishing.
