Description

This ornate 19th-century engraved map depicts the Department of Vaucluse in southeastern France, centered on its detailed road and district network rendered in fine line work with hand-colored routes. Vaucluse is a landlocked department in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region, home to the famous Fontaine de Vaucluse spring and the historic city of Avignon, seat of the medieval papacy. The composition is richly decorated with allegorical vignettes, portrait busts, draped curtains, agricultural produce, a waterfall, and textual cartouches in the style of mid-19th-century French decorative cartography by Victor Levasseur.
