Description

This richly detailed 1852 engraved map by Victor Levasseur depicts the Département de Lot-et-Garonne in southwestern France, framed by an ornate architectural arch flanked by portrait medallions, allegorical figures, and regional produce including barrels and pottery. The central cartographic panel shows the road and river network of the department, named for the confluence of the Lot and Garonne rivers — the Garonne being one of France's major waterways flowing toward Bordeaux. Decorative vignettes of the local landscape and statistical text panels surround the map, giving the piece both geographic and encyclopedic character typical of Levasseur's celebrated Atlas National Illustré.
