Description

This ornate 1852 engraved map by Victor Levasseur depicts the Département de la Sarthe in the Pays de la Loire region of northwestern France, its detailed road and town network rendered in soft color against a cream ground. The central cartographic oval is framed by elaborate allegorical vignettes — pastoral scenes with cattle and a horse, portrait medallions of notable figures, leafy garlands, and statistical tables — all characteristic of Levasseur's celebrated Atlas National Illustré series. La Sarthe is named for the Sarthe River that flows through it, and the department is perhaps best known as home to Le Mans, famous worldwide for its annual 24 Hours endurance race.
