Description

This finely detailed 1852 engraved map by Victor Levasseur depicts the Département de l'Orne in Normandy, northwestern France, surrounded by ornate allegorical vignettes featuring pastoral scenes, livestock, local industry, a regional coat of arms, and statistical text columns. The Orne department, named after the Orne River, is celebrated as the heartland of Camembert cheese production, a tradition originating in the village of Camembert in this very region. Rich hand-applied color highlights road and administrative networks across the map, while decorative border imagery evokes the agricultural and cultural heritage of this quintessentially Norman landscape.
