Description

This beautifully detailed 1852 engraved map by Víctor Levasseur depicts the Department of Ille-et-Vilaine in northwestern France, a region in Brittany whose prefecture is Rennes. The central map is richly decorated with hand-colored road and boundary lines, while ornamental vignettes frame the composition — including a panoramic cityscape, a coat of arms, pastoral scenes with livestock, and portraits of notable figures, reflecting the decorative cartographic tradition of 19th-century French atlas publishing. Ille-et-Vilaine takes its name from two rivers, the Ille and the Vilaine, and the department borders the English Channel to the north, making it a historically significant coastal and agricultural region.
