Description
This richly detailed 1852 world map by J.H. Colton presents the entire globe in Mercator's Projection, with countries and regions rendered in pastel hues of pink, green, teal, and yellow, adorned with illustrated sailing ships dotting the oceans. An ornate floral and scroll border frames the composition, lending it the refined character of mid-19th-century American cartographic publishing. Mercator's Projection — developed by Flemish geographer Gerardus Mercator in 1569 — became the standard for nautical navigation, making this map a historically significant artifact of geography and exploration.
