Description
This hand-colored antique engraved map depicts Greece and its surrounding Aegean islands as charted in 1850 by American cartographer Samuel Augustus Mitchell, one of the most prolific mapmakers of the 19th century. The map features the Greek mainland, the Peloponnese peninsula, and the Aegean archipelago rendered in soft washes of pink, gold, and green, with an inset of Crete (labeled 'Candia') at the lower left. Greece, a country in southeastern Europe with a coastline stretching over 13,000 kilometers, had only recently gained independence in 1821–1829, making this map a historically significant snapshot of the newly formed nation.
