Description

This beautifully hand-colored antique map from 1850 depicts Canada East — also known as Lower Canada, the region that would become the province of Quebec — rendered in soft pastel tones of pink, yellow, and green with detailed place names, rivers, and county boundaries. An inset in the lower right highlights Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, the Maritime provinces bordering the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Lower Canada, which encompassed the St. Lawrence River valley and was home to a predominantly French-speaking population, was formally united with Upper Canada under the Act of Union in 1841, making this map a rare snapshot of a pivotal transitional era in Canadian history.
