Description
This hand-colored antique engraved map depicts 'Turkey in Asia,' covering the vast territories of the Ottoman Empire across Anatolia, the Levant, Mesopotamia, and the Caucasus region, with the Black Sea to the north and the Mediterranean Sea to the west. An inset in the lower-left corner highlights the environs of Constantinople (modern-day Istanbul), the Ottoman capital straddling Europe and Asia at the Bosphorus Strait. Published by Samuel Augustus Mitchell in 1850, the map is rendered in the distinctive pastel palette of the era, with political boundaries delineated in pink, yellow, and green, offering a vivid snapshot of the region's mid-19th-century geography.
