Description
This hand-colored 1849 Mitchell engraved map depicts Turkey in Asia — the vast Ottoman Empire territories encompassing modern-day Turkey, Syria, Iraq (then Mesopotamia), Palestine, and neighboring regions. The map features an inset of Constantinople (present-day Istanbul), the imperial capital straddling Europe and Asia along the Bosphorus Strait, and is bordered by the Black Sea to the north and the Mediterranean Sea to the south and west. Rendered in delicate pastel hues of pink, yellow, and olive green with detailed place-name lettering, it is an excellent example of mid-19th-century American cartographic artistry from Samuel Augustus Mitchell's atlas.
