Description

This richly hand-colored 1846 engraved map of Ohio depicts the state's 88 counties in alternating shades of pink, yellow, and gold, with canal routes, roads, and distances carefully annotated throughout. Ohio, the 17th state admitted to the Union in 1803, is shown with a detailed inset plan of Cincinnati in the lower right corner and a profile of the Ohio Canal along the bottom margin. The map was published by S. Augustus Mitchell and engraved by Burroughs, reflecting the mid-19th-century golden age of American cartography when Ohio's canal system was central to the state's westward commerce.
